Symantec: Hacking ATM SMS

Symantec has detected a new variant of the malware for ATMs Backdoor.Ploutus.B, which allows attackers to remotely monitor the ATM using the connected mobile phone. Connecting the phone to the ATM and infecting it with a virus, malicious users have the possibility to send to the phone a SMS-message with the code commands. Receiving such a message, the phone converts a command in the network package and via a USB cable transfers ATM, forcing them to give cash.

Scheme of attack using Ploutus
In the address of companies and private users increasingly, we hear calls to switch from Windows XP to a newer version of this operating system – if not for extended functionality, then for the sake of a more reliable system of protection and best technical support. ATMs is, in fact, the computers that control the access to cash. And it turns out that almost 95% of all ATMs are running Windows XP. In light of the fact that official support for Windows XP will end April 8, 2014, the banking industry is facing the threat of cyberattacks on its “parks” ATMs. And this risk is not hypothetical – it is already happening. Attackers attack ATMs, using increasingly sophisticated methods.
At the end of 2013, Symantec reported that Mexico was detected a new malicious program for ATMs that could give hackers the ability, using the external keypad to make a ATM to give cash. This threat was named Backdoor.Ploutus. A few weeks later, the company experts have discovered a new species, which already boasted a modular architecture. This new version was translated into the English language that suggested that the attackers had decided to begin to explore new territory. This new strain was named Backdoor.Ploutus.B.
An interesting feature of the new variant Ploutus is that he has given attackers the ability to send on your ATM SMS message, and then just walk up to him and pick up the guns come out of his money. It may seem incredible, but such technology is currently used in several places around the world.
