MWC 2015: MediaTek has unveiled the first chipset for tablets with ARM Cortex-A72

The company MediaTek has introduced a system-on-chip MT8173. According to the manufacturer, this is the first chipset for tablets based on ARM Cortex-A72, the high-performance processor in the industry. In MediaTek MT8173 used 64-bit multi-core architecture ARM big.LITTLE two productive 64-bit cores Cortex-A72, and two cost-effective 64-bit cores Cortex-A53. MT8173 provides a six-fold increase in performance compared to the chipset MediaTek MT8125 presented in 2013. MediaTek MT8173 operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz and supports standard parallel computing OpenCL. All four cores can operate simultaneously with a peak frequency of 2.4 GHz.

In MediaTek MT8173 implemented brand management technology cores CorePilot 2.0, bringing together in a heterogeneous computing system is not only the processor core, as in the case of CorePilot the first version, but core graphics accelerator. In addition, MT8173 supports displays with refresh rate of 120 Hz, providing greater clarity and smoothness of the scrolling image compared to conventional 60 Hz screens. A graphics accelerator PowerVR GX6250 supports OpenGL ES 3.1 and OpenCL processing up to 350 million triangles per second / 2.8 million gigapixels per second screens with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
The chipset provides the ability to playback video Ultra HD 4K formats H. 264/HEVC(10-bit)/VP9 with up to 30 frames per second, support HDMI and Miracast, as well as cameras with a resolution of up to 20 megapixels, the correction function during video recording and the ability to overlay LOMO effects. Delivery MT8173 companies-developers of the devices has already begun. The first tablets based chipset will be available in the second half of 2015.
