Facebook closes MSQRD, an augmented reality selfie app that was acquired in 2016 and hasn’t been updated for several years. Last Friday, Facebook made an official announcement that it would stop supporting the app and remove it from the iOS app stores and Android. This acquisition helped strengthen Facebook’s internal augmented reality technology, and the latest filters that centered around MSQRD have become commonplace in social networking applications from Facebook and others.
Starting April 13th, we have been closing MSQRD. Our goal is to provide the greatest possible experience for people using our services. Partly thanks to the early MSQRD technology, we have built a complete platform for effect creators for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Portal. Facebook
Facebook acquired MSQRD in January 2016 after the app became incredibly popular due to masks that turned users into superheroes, animals, and other characters. Then Facebook promised to continue developing the application, while at the same time integrating the technology into its own products.
