Introduced the new iPad Pro. Lidar, new platform and Magic Keyboard with touchpad

In addition to the updated MacBook Air and Mac mini, Apple today also introduced the new iPad Pro tablets. And here there are almost more changes than in a laptop. Let’s start with the parameters. The first thing that catches your eye is the camera unit, which is similar in design to cameras in current iPhone models. iPad Pro received a dual camera with sensors with a resolution of 12 and 10 megapixels (the second – “shirik”), with the presence of a double optical zoom. But more interesting is what takes the place of the third module. The fact is that the new tablets are equipped with lidars. Apple claims that the lidar in the iPad Pro provides features that were never previously available on any mobile device.
Firstly, lidar is used as a more functional depth sensor, as it is able to accurately determine the distance to objects located no further than 5 meters from the device. As stated in the press release, this works “at the level of photons with nanosecond speed.” Together with the capabilities of the artificial intelligence platform, this extends the ability of the device to understand the surrounding space. You can probably say here that this is similar to what Google promoted as part of the Project Tango project. From the point of view of practice, everything is more complicated. Apple says that any application with ARKit support will have access to lidar data. For example, the Measure application can now more quickly and accurately determine a person’s height. But in general, Apple almost did not provide examples regarding the real use of lidar in the iPad Pro. We can assume that it is mainly needed for augmented reality applications, but this is a rather specific niche that is of little interest to the average user.
Continuing to talk about the parameters, it is worth saying that the models are still two: with an 11-inch screen and a 12.9-inch display. The resolution of the first is 2388 x 1668 pixels, the second – 2732 x 2048 pixels. These are still Liquid Retina screens with ProMotion, True Tone support and custom lamination. The tablet’s heart is the new Apple A12Z Bionic SoC. It is known that it includes an eight-core processor, an eight-core GPU, as well as a Neural Engine unit. There is no data on performance, but we can expect new records in AnTuTu. Separately, Apple focuses on microphones, which are now five pieces. The company speaks of studio quality sound capture. There are still four speakers. Of the rest, it is worth noting the front camera with a resolution of 7 megapixels, support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, the availability of versions with a cellular modem, USB-C port, 10-hour battery life and flash memory from 128 GB to 1 TB
But for many, the most interesting innovation will not be lidar and not a new platform. Along with tablets, Apple showed off a new keyboard for the iPad Pro called Magic Keyboard. As recent rumors insisted, it really got a touchpad. The keyboard design is such that it allows you to adjust the position of the tablet over a wide range, further bringing the iPad closer to a regular laptop. It is worth noting that the Magic Keyboard has a full-size keyboard with a scissor mechanism and 1 mm key travel. And there is also a USB-C port for charging the tablet, and the USB-C connector on the tablet itself remains unoccupied, so that it can be used to connect drives or something else. You can buy Magic Keyboard in May. Now to the prices. For an 11-inch iPad Pro without a modem they ask from 800 to 1300 dollars, with a modem – from 950 to 1450 dollars. For a large model, you will have to pay between $ 1,000 and $ 1,500 for versions without a modem and from $ 1,150 to $ 1,650 for modifications with a modem. The Magic Keyboard is priced at $ 300 or $ 350 depending on the tablet model, and it is compatible with the previous generation iPad Pro . Updated Smart Keyboard Folio costs 180 or 200 dollars.
