As we already mentioned, yesterday Yandex published on its YouTube channel a video with the first demonstration of its own self-governing taxi. Today, the developers gave details about the project.
An unmanned vehicle was tested by Yandex.Taxi in mid-May. And in the tests involved two working prototypes of unmanned vehicles. They are still at the beginning of development, but they are already able to independently move along a given route, identify and circumvent obstacles, including other cars and people. If the obstacle can not be circumvented, the machine stops and resumes movement when it becomes possible.
The first tests were conducted in a closed territory – in Moscow, not far from the main office of Yandex. They showed that the prototypes successfully cope with the tasks. Checking in conditions close to "combat", that is, on public roads, is scheduled for 2018. The video shows a prototype based on the Toyota Prius. The second prototype is based on Kia Soul. The real basis of the UAV is the software and hardware complex installed in the car: sensors that collect information about the car itself and the environment, and software – it processes the data from the sensors and determines how the machine should move. Machines are equipped with cameras that look in different directions, on the roof mounted a lidar of a circular view. In addition, the radar readings as well as the sensors that determine the location, speed and direction of movement are used. These are GPS / GLONASS receivers, a block of inertial meters and sensors that measure odometer data – for example, the speed of rotation of individual wheels.
